Recent Shore Snowsports success

2024 Interschools Australian Snowsports Championships SWRMembers,

As you know, one of the principal aims of Lampada Ski Club is to encourage participation of members in the sport of skiing and skiing competitions. As part of this encouragement, your club sponsors Shore students in skiing competitions throughout each winter. This sponsorship has helped fuel Shore’s recent success in competitions held during the 2024 winter. We received the following email and information from Shore’s Head of Snowsports Warwick Payne:

Dear Simon and all Lampada Ski Club Members

The School enjoyed some great success this year, placing fourth overall at the Interschools Australian Championships behind Scots, King’s and Melbourne Grammar. A superb achievement.

Highlights from the competition include:

  • In Division 4 Cross Country Classic, William Sprott won NATIONAL INDIVIDUAL BRONZE.
  • In Division 2 Ski Cross, Nicholas Yates, Charlie Kovacs and Taj Robertson won NATIONAL TEAM BRONZE
  • In Division 1 Snowboard Slopestyle, Noah Shepherd won NATIONAL INDIVIDUAL SILVER
  • In Division 1 Snowboard Cross, Noah, George Lane and Neo Pressley won NATIONAL TEAM SILVER.
  • In Division 1 Ski Cross, Duncan Cowan, Calvin Shortus and Lewis Kingdom won the National title, TEAM GOLD
  • Duncan Cowan was awarded Australian Champion, INDIVIDUAL GOLD in Ski Cross. He also placed 4th individually in Alpine GS after only one day ‘warm up’ before the event. He won gold in Ski Cross the day after Alpine.

This year’s Lampada Ski Club awards were awarded to the following boys:

Best Newcomer: Ari Ganassin (Division 1 Skiing)

Most Improved: Max Papodopoulos (Division 1 Skiing)

Outstanding Performance: Duncan Cowan (Captain and Division 1 Skiing)

As well as enjoying consistent and great success in Interschools over his school career,  in the past 18 months Duncan has also represented Australia in Ski Cross at the Junior World Championships in San Pellegrino, Italy and the Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon Korea. Duncan enjoyed the privilege of being the Flag Bearer for Australia, along with Tara Baker, at the opening ceremony for the Games. For his outstanding contribution to Snowsports and to the School, Duncan was also awarded the Shore Honour Award. He is a formidable athlete and a most outstanding ambassador for Australia, the School and the sport.

For a more detailed report on Nationals, please find attached article that was published in the Shore Weekly Record. I am happy to provide the equivalent articles for the Sydney Region and NSW State Championship competitions if you wish.

Thank you very much for your continued interest and support of Snowsports at Shore, Simon and the Lampada Board. It is greatly appreciated. The sport is thriving, with ever increasing depth, and we have a wonderful community of passionate ski and snowboard families who cannot wait for the 2025 season!

With warm regards,

WARWICK PAYNE
